New Mexico Bear Fight Dogs ALBURQUERQUE, N.Mex. -- Two Albuquerque residents woke up to find a 300-pound black bear in one of their trees this morning. That's when they realized their dogs were the ones who chased the scared bear up the tree in the first place.
Meet Balto and Sasha. These two Siberian huskies were the ones who scared the bear up the tree.
Larry Wells said, "I came outside and I saw one big paw hanging off about 20 feet up in a tree.
The tree sits behind Larry Wells and his wife's home on the aptly-named "Black Bear Road," and this isn't the first time Balto and Sasha have taken on a bear.
Larry said, "So he's got two bears, two bear notches on his collar. He's quite a dog."
But the couple said it's by far the biggest one they've ever seen. When Fish and Game came out to tranquilize the bear, it took three darts to sedate him.
Larry's wife, Patricia Dickinson, said, "As one of the guys said, 'He's still perky.'"
Betsy Dodson lives next door. She saw the whole thing from her front porch.
Dodson said, "They had to use three different darts. And then they had the bear propped over on the top of the tree, and so they had to get up there and shake the tree."
Dickinson said, "Two of the guys got up into the tree and actually put a rope around the chest of the bear, and then they gently lowered it onto an air mattress."
Wells said, "He stretched out. As he was lowered down, of course, he stretched out. I would say he's at least six feet, and he was very bulky."
Fish and Game then took the bear to a spot west of Albuquerque and let him go.
