EDGEWATER - On Aug. 9 at 9 a.m., the dog owner of the incident that occurred on Aug. 1 in Edgewater, made his first court appearance.
Mario Gonzales appeared in Edgewater municipal court to answer six charges stemming from an incident in the 2400 Block of Newland Street on Aug. 1, where Gonzales' dogs chased a mail carrier and was later shot by police.
Gonzales was charged with two counts of vicious dog, two counts of animals running at large and two counts of no rabies tags.
At Tuesday's court appearance, he reached a disposition plea agreement with the Edgewater City Attorney and pleaded no-contest to the two counts of vicious dog, dismissing the other charges.
The Edgewater municipal judge fined Gonzales $780 for the charges of vicious dog, and set a separate disposition and restitution hearing on Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m.
At that hearing, the municipal judge will determine the fate of the pit bull that is still being confined at the Foothills Animal Shelter.
In court, the defendant expressed that he was "Sorry for the postal carrier being chased" and stated "It's not something we wanted."
Gonzales also stated that this was a "tragic accident," and that he went above and beyond to secure his yard and could not foresee the dogs jumping through the screen window."
The officer that was bit is recovering and is back to work at the police department.
