23 dogs taken from Steele City home - Lincoln Journal Star

The humane societies in Lincoln, Omaha and Fairbury took in 23 dogs, five of them puppies, Friday morning from a house in Steele City that sheriff's deputies deemed "unfit for the animals and the resident."

Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies went to the house after getting a complaint about possible animal neglect, according to a sheriff's office news release.

The adult dogs, which are Labrador retrievers and Labrador retriever mixes, went to the Capital Humane Society in Lincoln and Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha, the release said. The puppies were taken to the Fairbury dog pound.

The resident, whose name was not released, has found another place to stay, the sheriff's office said. The county attorney will consider criminal charges.

The dogs are available for adoption, according to the news release.
