Teach an Old Robot New Tricks

It amazes us how well our furry friends can adapt to difficult circumstances.  And now, scientists are studying this ability for use in technology.  Engineers are researching the movements of dogs who are missing limbs to aid in robot design.

"German researchers used high-tech infrared cameras to record the movements of dogs missing a fore limb or hind limb as they walked and ran on a treadmill."

Scientists want to help robots adapt in case of "injury," especially in cases where they cannot be repaired, such as in outer space.  The tests reveal the coping strategies used by dogs with missing limbs, which aid in planning for accidents.
