Congress Gone to the Dogs

Love dogs?  So do our lawmakers!  From Kentucky to California, from Chihuahuas to Labradors, our Congresspeople bring their dogs to work in Washington, D.C.  The Washington Post reports that about 24 dogs currently roam the halls of Capitol Hill. 

And they're not just roaming.  They're swimming (in fountains), making messes (on carpets), and barking at chairpersons (yes, this happened!).  They're even participating in contests like the Congressional Canine Honors, which includes such categories as "Elder Statesdog."

Of course, dogs are nothing new in D.C. According to The Post:

"Congress has a long history of lawmakers bringing their dogs to work, says Senate historian Donald Ritchie. In the 19th century, John Randolph of Virginia often strode into the Senate chamber with his hunting hounds at his heels. The late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) was known for walking his Portuguese water dogs, Sunny and Splash, in the grassy area next to the Russell Senate Office Building."
